Last week I got the opportunity to play with jazz legend Steve Coleman and his band The Five Elements, together with the DoelenEnsemble we formed The Council of Balance to perform works from his newest CD “Synovial Joints”. We spent 3 days rehearsing with Steve and the band in Rotterdam before heading out on tour, playing concerts in Gent, Den Bosch, Rotterdam, and last but not least as headliners at the Bologna Jazz Festival. It was such an amazing experience working with Steve and really getting into his music. The highlight was definitely the concert in Bologna, which was totally sold out (1000 seats) and was also broadcast live on Italian radio. My parents in Saskatoon even managed to tune in online through the website of Radio 3 Italy! One week felt almost too short to spend with the music of Steve, and I think we all came away from the project really hoping there will be many more opportunities to perform these brilliant works.
